Several ways to raise awareness about environmental issues
The model of clean vegetable farming has been implemented by the women’s association branch of Truong Son 1, Vinh Truong Ward, Nha Trang City since 2013, drawing the participation of many members and residents. Accordingly, women have created green space by growing vegetables and reducing waste discharge.
Suoi Hiep Commune Women’s Association (Dien Khanh District) mobilizes students to exchange trash for study items.
Truong Son 1 Women’s Association Branch has nearly 100 members. The significance and meaning of the model have been delivered to members through regular meetings and activities. Women are instructed how to classify garbage into organic and inorganic waste. Organic waste is used to make compost for farming and the collection of inorganic waste is to raise funds for the poor, according to Nguyen Thi Hoa, Chief of Truong Son 1 Women’s Association Branch.
In the communes of Van Long, Van Binh, Van Phuoc, Van Ninh District, the environmental protection campaign has been promoted by Women’s Association Branches in various ways: launching monthly beach clean-up operation, encouraging the use of shopping baskets to reduce the waste of plastics bags, etc.
Nguyen Hong Khanh Quynh, Chairperson of Van Ninh District Women’s Union said in recent years, many models, namely “Waste collection to raise funds” and “Exchanging trash for gifts” have attracted the participation of members and residents in response to the campaign against plastic waste. The model has raised members’ awareness of trash classification and helped reduce the discharge of single-use plastics, contributing to improving environmental responsibilities. The model has expanded throughout the district.
New action models
The Provincial Women Union’s environmental protection campaign has been widely promoted through such models as “women get involved in environmental protection”, women reduce the use of plastics”, “self-managed road”, “clean vegetable cultivation” and “waste collection”, contributing to effectively implementing the programs on new rural construction and civic culture creation.
According to Nguyen Quynh Nga, Chairperson of Khanh Hoa Provincial Women’s Union, 1,803 new rural construction activities included “Green house”, “Tree planting”, “dust bins placed at markets”, 113,550 families signing waste treatment pledges and joining the waste collection, earning the proceeds of nearly VND2.5 billion by the end of 2021. In response to the World’s Environment Day (June 5), the Women’s Union at all levels has run many new models such as plastic waste collection in Suoi Hiep Commune, Dien Khanh District; “clean house and nice garden” in Ninh Hung Commune, Ninh Hoa Town; waste collection to raise funds for poor women at women’s association branches in Ninh Thuy Ward, Ninh Hoa and so on.
In the coming time, the women’s association at all levels will continue boosting and diversifying propaganda to provide environmental protection knowledge and skills and call for actions to preserve the environment. Moreover, the association at all levels will effectively implement the campaign against plastic waste, integrate environmental activities into its campaigns, reduce the use of plastic bags and encourage proper waste collection and treatment.
